The 'War of the Mountain,' which the Lebanese commonly call 'harb al-jabal,' refers to the 1983 conflict in Mount Lebanon’s Chouf and Aley regions. The conflict was another Syrian attempt to control Lebanon and one of the worst chapters in the 1975-1990 Lebanon War; it was also about the old and complex relationship between the Christians and the Druze, the two communities that were at the center of modern Lebanon’s formation. After Israel entered Lebanon in 1982 to expel the Palestine Liberation Organization, three military forces became present on the same ground in Chouf and Aley: the Israeli army, the (Druze) Progressive Socialist Party led by Walid Junblatt, and the (Christian) Lebanese Forces whose troops in Chouf and Aley were led by Samir Geagea. This book is an edited translation of 'Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham' written in Arabic by Paul Andary, a former Lebanese Forces military official who participated in that conflict and wrote the horrendous story of what happened from its historical, political, military, and human aspects. 'Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham' was published in 1985 and remains in demand to this day.

Truthful and powerful. An honest account of one of the many attempts this century to ethnically cleanse the Christians of Lebanon. This Christian fighter/Lawyer from the north who loses his own brother while defending Christians in the Shouf Mountain against a coalition of Druze, Palestinians, Syrians, and Somali Muslim invaders, gives an honest account of the events. He self-critic his own people especially Christian Lebanese politicians who sat watching from the sideline hoping for a western intervention while their people were being massacred.
I have several issues with this text. The first is stylistic. The translation from Arabic to English is clunky and does not flow well. As an Arabic speaker, I understand the difficulty in translating from Arabic to English, but this is a subpar job. The book reads like one long rambling sentence and at times lacks coherence. My second issue with the book is factual. I realize that the book is meant to be from the perspective of the Lebanese Forces (Christians), but the book often fails to provide sources that corroborate some of its claims. One issue I struggle with in particular is claims of how close the PSP (Druze) collaborated with Israel during the war on the mountain. There were also some inaccuracies in providing historical context on Christian-Druze relations in the Mountain.
This was a very well done work about a specific battle between the Christians, Druze, Syrians, PLO and Israelis in an area outside of Beirut. One must take into account the very sectarian viewpoint of the author, who is a Christian, and views everything through that prism. That in itself is illuminating about the very nature of Lebanese society and its factional nature. The author describes in detail the main battle between Christian LF and Druze forces which is brutal where both sides think nothing of mass murder, kidnapping, torture, ethnic cleansing, and limited genocide. Their mentality towards warfare is that the enemy's population base is a legitimate target and can be targeted with indiscriminate artillery, sniping, and armor attacks as part of their ethnic cleansing campaigns which is synonymous with their form of warfare. This is a good read, translated from the original Arabic, which describes the political, social, and military events in detail which the author personally participated in. 5 stars.
An excellent book that sheds light on the suffering of the Lebanese Christian community in what became known in 1983 as the “War of the Mountain.†Paul Andari accurately captured the events and the complicated politics that lead to one of the worst massacres of the civil war; an ethno-religious cleansing carried out by Druze’ PSP forces against the Christian civilian population of Southern Mount Lebanon who already had been victims of several massacres at the hands of the PLO and their leftist allies since 1975.
A well detailed book. I have read the arabic version originally in 1985. All true facts are described through historical details. The english version is just as captivating as the arabic one. Once you start reading you can't stop. Highly recommended.
Western journalists i.e. Robert Fisk always demonized Lebanese Christians and made the PLO sound like the were angels from God. It is great to see a perspective from the Christian side of the war, the side that is always forgotten.
I ordered two books and I will order two more to give as a gift. I recommend this book to those who wants to understand what the LF went through in the Mountain war.I love this book and a big Salute to all those who died in the Mountain.
